Tourist Spots in Davao City

The Philippine Eagle Nature Center

If you want to take a glimpse of the coveted and nearly extinct Philippine Eagle, then the Philippine Eagle Nature Center is where you should go. It is the home of 36 Philippine Eagles, ten other bird species, 4 mammal species, and 2 reptile species. The place is also ideal for educational trips especially about learning the ecosystem where these eagles could thrive.

Davao Crocodile Park
In the heart of the city lies a habitat filled with one of the wildest creatures known to men, the crocodiles. What started as mere fascination to crocodiles has blossomed and grew into a lucrative leather business and a wildlife preserve that is home to many species aside from saltwater and freshwater crocodiles. Take some time to visit this place and enjoy the wonders it offers.

People's Park
One of Davao’s pride and a tourist magnet is the People’s Park located at the center of the city. The cultural-themed park is projected with life sized sculptures of the Lumads in Davao City, the Philippine eagle and many more. This 4-hectare park also features the Durian Dome (a tropical fruit Davao City is known for), the Promenade (a track favoured by many joggers and health buffs fore early morning exercise), the Dancing Fountain (the first in Mindanao), a 10-meter man-made waterfalls against a backdrop of a volcanic rock wall, benches and Kid’s playground.

Mt. Apo
Mt. Apo is not exclusive to Davao City. It could be reached through other places in Mindanao such as Bukidnon and Kidapawan. However, most Mindanao outsiders would need to pass through Davao City in order to reach any of the trails leading to the famous mountain peak of Mt. Apo, the largest mountain in the Philippines.

The Trending #Amalayer

The short clip that garnered a lot of media and internet attention dubbed the “Amalayer Video” by most netizens, saw a young kolehiyala spew words of fire to a lady guard causing embarrassment and humiliation.
The kolehiyala, now known by the whole world as Paula Jamie Salvosa, has been criticized by many for her loss of temper and utter disrespect for authority. And in the process this has reflected of US spewing words of hate to a person we basically judged because she was angry.

In that light, let’s analyze and not react so quickly. Why was she angry? Did she have the right to be angry? If you were in her position, will you be angry? I understand she went over parading her anger foolishly to the point everyone is looking at her, (thus the video) but the point is the video DOES NOT show the full story. We just see the aftermath of what transpired before it.

Let’s put it this way: If you see a video showing an arrested “holdaper” being given the beating of a lifetime by the notorious “taumbayan” being kicked at, punched at, to the point he almost dies, do you feel pity? Do you feel anger? Or do you feel the same feeling as if Manny Pacquiao just knocked out Ricky Hatton. That is because we universally hate holdapers and seeing one being given “street justice” is enough for us not to depise the wrong act. Now putting the Amalayer video in comparison, we then have judged the person because it is our norm of Filipino culture to respect the elders, more so to women.

This is now where our Filipinoism comes in. We are so obsessed in real life drama, so-in-to a story where we are very comfortable because WE are not the one being talked about.  But everyone has the right to their opinion, but opinions are best formulated and given if you have seen and heard both sides.

FAVORITE FOOD

PORK SINIGANG:

Pork Sinigang or Sinigang na Baboy is a sour soup native to the Philippines. This particular soup dish uses pork as the main ingredient though beef, shrimp, fish, and even chicken can be used. Bony parts of the pig known as “buto-buto” are usually preferred for this dish.
There are several ingredients that can be used as souring agent. The most common and widely used is the "sampaloc".
I grew-up eating pork sinigang with a saucer of "patis". Hehehe!

PORK ADOBO WITH BOILED EGGS:

As we all know, Pork Adobo has been one of the favorite Filipino Recipes. In adobo, which is the manner of cooking this dish, has been regarded as a traditional method of cooking meat and vegetables. This Pork Adobo Recipe is another unique version of the same dish that all of us love.
What make this dish stand out are not the eggs. I must admit that having boiled eggs with pork adobo is a good idea.
Aside from having a good taste, the secret in preparing the best adobo dish is all in the meat. Make sure that the pork is as tender as it can be. You can simmer the pork for about 1 hour to make it tender and to extract the entire porky flavor.

    GINATAANG TILAPIA:

Ginataan is a Filipino cooking method that means “cooked in coconut milk”. Ginataang Tilapia is a dish where Tilapia is cooked in coconut milk. This method is popularized by the Bicolanos.
There are many other ingredients that can be cooked with Coconut milk but my taste buds are craving for Tilapia as of the moment. I can’t wait to put my hands on this yummy fish.

KARE-KARE:

Kare Kare is a traditional Filipino stew complimented with a thick savory peanut sauce. Besides the peanuts, this dish depends on the shrimp paste in order to be fully enjoyed.

BEEF CALDERETA:

One of my favorite Filipino dishes is the Kaldereta or Caldereta. It is a hearty meat dish using beef, or pork combined with potatoes, carrots, tomato sauce, and liver spread or liver paste. This is a popular dish served during special occasions and a regular in every Filipino cookbook. My family loves Beef Kalderata. As special at it may seem, preparing something like this takes some time and patience but it is all worth the wait.
